Must love a pet

Are you a pet person?  What kind of pet preferences do you have in a future spouse?

YES I LOVE MY DOG, her name is Brady, she is a dog, not a person, but she is a great dog.
I do not like cats, I do not like them AT ALL. I also do not like little yapper dogs or dogs that people carry as accessories to their outfits.
I like big sweet dogs that play fetch, and can go hiking, and can go for runs.
That is how I really feel

I have two cats and a very large dog. When I looked at getting a dog I wanted a DOG not a little yippee dog. My little 7 pound puppy is now 117 pounds.
It is my hope that my husband likes both dogs and cats and doesn’t mind having a few around.

Now I miss my dog, Kodey.. he is a lab collie mix.

Pets are awesome and I can only marry someone who loves animals. (Ok its not like a huge deal breaker, like they are a paedobaptist or something :P but.. well… it would be tough)

Anyone ever have any crazy bizarre pets?

I grew up with several dogs and cats in the house as a child and I enjoyed playing with them.

I find that Im indifferent when it comes to owning one, maybe its because I cant keep a pet in my present apartment.

I known best friend is a pet person.Ahe has a dog and i have always liked the idea of pet ownership.now I have an idea of what pet ownership is like I want to own a dog.My friends taught me a lot about responsibilities of pet ownership so now when I get my own place i want a dog. A German Shepard would be good because they are good around kids and family and they would protect my home against any unfortunate would be intruder.Plus German Shepard are highly smart and I think that is a plus having a smart dog.Just my 2 cents :)

I like dogs and cats. I like cats that like to cuddle, but don’t walk around yowling all night. I like big dogs, I think. We always had terrier-sized dogs growing up and I always wanted a big dog in the Irish wolfhound size category. Now I know more and realize that the bigger the dog, the more exercise they need to be happy and the smarter the dog, the more exercise and mental stimulation they need to be happy and not become dangerous, so we’ll see where life leads. I really want a cat and a dog, but I would settle for one or the other. ;) Just no spiders/snakes/lizards, please.

Snakes rule however I understand your fears.

I haven’t got a pet, but have always wanted a dog. I am thinking of getting one now, but worry that it would put off someone who would otherwise be interested. It would also be nice if they were a pet person, for them to be involved in the choice of a family pet.

If I were to get one I would love a mid-size mongrel/mix possibly with a bit of German Shepherd/ Border Collie.

I like dogs. But not mean ones or yappy ankle-biters.

I have a beagle. His name is Copper.

I had an awesome lab mix dog for 12 years who lived with me in 4 different states and was my best buddy! He passed away in April… I must say I just couldn’t handle not having a furry friend around and recently adopted a puppy from the shelter. She is so much fun and is constantly reminding me that puppies are much different than 12 year old dogs!! But she brings a lot of joy :) .

I have two cats that are incessantly entertaining and great company.

Did you all know that there are more cat than dog owners in the US? :)

I love animals — but I love them the most when they are outside of the house. :-)

I’m not opposed to having a dog or cat indoors, though I don’t like the thought of babies crawling around on the floor where cats have been sitting. :-P So, I wouldn’t mind pets inside at first, but once kids come along, Rover and FeeFee get the boot. ;-)

I grew up on a small farm, so one of my favorite pets growing up was my goat, Cara. Goats, when well brought-up, have a personality like a dog. They follow you around, want to be petted, etc. :-)

And the Border Collies are the best dogs out there, hands down. No discussion here folks! ;-) Seriously, they were the best dogs we owned. I hope to get another someday!

I enjoy most animals, but could go either way on owning a pet or not. I currently have a dog and although she is a responsibility she is a joy!

I also enjoy the outdoor animals. I just recently enjoyed seeing wild buffalo, antelope, turkey, and donkeys. It’s so neat to enjoy them in their environment!

  14. EppieM said the following on September 2, 2010 at 1:55 pm

@MissLea Love the idea of a pet goat! My love of Border Collies is less well-based. I once read a book called Shadow the Sheepdog and, although others have confirmed my prejudice, they have been one of my favourite dogs ever since.

Absolutely love dogs! I’ve had two dogs as I was growing up ( cocker spaniel, and spring spaniel), and I can’t wait until I’m living somewhere that I can have another dog(s).

I do like other animals, )like cats, guinea pigs, etc.) but dogs definitely take precedence for me. :)

  16. MissLea said the following on September 2, 2010 at 3:00 pm

@EppieM — Border Collies are recognized as the smartest breed of dog. Ours were the most well-behaved animals! Not to mention that their personalities were eerily rational and super loving. They were wonderful family dogs — can’t wait to get another!

I have a wonderful pet cat…all 13 pounds of cuddly fur. Never had pet dogs growing up so still a bit nervous when other people’s dogs jump up on you.

I’ve had cats in the past, but am not a huge fan. My preference is for large dogs. I’ve had a Golden Retriever growing up and my parents currently have a German Shepherd. When I was little we also had Black Labs, but I found them to be too hyper for my taste. I’d love to get a German Shepherd of my own eventually. They are very intelligent and very protective, which I appreciate. It’s nice to have a dog that will let you know if it senses anything is not quite right.

@TravelingAlissa – For odd pets: my brother has a leopard gecko and I had a short-tailed opossum at one time. It was kind of like a chinchilla with a leathery possum tail and possum face. The first one I had would dangle upside-down on my finger by its tail, which was neat. We also did some animal rehab with squirrels.
We raised and released a total of 5 squirrels. The first one we found in a fallen nest when she was two days old. After we released her we could call her name and she would come running down the trees in our backyard to get on your shoulder and eat out of your hand.

I love most all animals (not too crazy about yappy dogs) so I would want to marry a pet person. We had all sorts when I was growing up – cats, dogs, rabbits, hamsters, fish, no birds. My far and away favorite are cats. They give unconditional love once you learn to understand them. I currently have 2 cats.
When my previous cat died, I only lasted < 48 hours when I had to get another one. My house seemed too empty and silent without a pet for companionship.

I’m a dog person, but I’m not able to have any dogs in my current apartment.

I’m allergic to cats, I can be around them only for a limited amount of time.

Ideally, I would some day like to have a labradoodle, because labradores are my favorite dogs, but I need something more hypoallergenic.

Currently, since I can’t have a dog, I find myself with 3 leopard geckos and 1 bahaman anole. I’m not set on having lizards for pets for the rest of my life, but it’s fun for now.

I love dogs and our family dog is a black lab/rotweiller mix. He’s very playful and LOVES the water. But he’s too scared to jump off the dock up at Grandma’s house. Sigh.. we’ll have to work on that :)

Even though I love our dog to pieces, I think I would prefer having a smaller dog that would be easier for me to handle. Sometimes our dog is a bit too much! (He’s getting close to 100 lbs.)

As for cats, they’re ok. We have two, mostly for catching mice.

I’ve never really liked very many other pets.

I’m hoping my future husband will love dogs too.

I like cats as kittens, but I’m allergic to both forms, so no felines for me.

I prefer dogs that could play football ‘with’ you, rather than ‘be’ the football.

In general, I don’t like house dogs b/c of the hair everywhere and the smell. But, it seems they’re so much more part of the family when they’re in the house… conundrum!

I travel too much now to have any pet but my goldfish. My current one, Tokyo, actually has a personality and makes just enough noise blowing bubbles and poking his marbles to provide a nice background noise in the house. And an added bonus is that every kids finds him fascinating (even teens) and no one is afraid of him or allergic to him :)

  23. Kristen said the following on September 3, 2010 at 5:15 pm

Jenn, I’m allergic to them, too, yet still have two frisky felines. Granted, they don’t like their weekly baths, but it makes keeping them manageable. Plus, there’s less hair everywhere and they simply look, feel, and smell better.

I’m curious, would pets of a certain variety be a deal breaker for any of you?

  24. bll9170 said the following on September 3, 2010 at 8:49 pm

I love my dog Lilo and I’m a pretty laid back dog owner. I’ve never thought much about a pet being a deal breaker.

  25. godslittlegirl said the following on September 3, 2010 at 10:17 pm

I’m not a big dog person…generally speaking, I don’t like them. I’m sorry…but it is true. I grew up with cats. But when my 18-year old cat died, I didn’t have any desire to have another…or one of my own since I was out on my own by then, and the cat was my parents’. By that time I had discovered the joy of life without pet hair all over everything and me and without pet smells! I was hooked!

But I would consider having cats again one day. I MIGHT be convinced to have a dog one day…MAYBE…I really enjoyed my pet water frogs. My roommates and I had two of them (the kind that live totally underwater..really tiny ones). Bilbo and Frodo were our little mascots, since our pad was named The Lilypad, and they were STELLAR! Mesmerizing and relaxing to watch, so cute, and didn’t leave smells or pet hair anywhere! Ideal! I’d like to find an albino one and name it Galndalf ;)

I love dogs. Currently live with a cat though. And that was tough at first, because well… he’s not my cat and he was here first, but we do get along – as much as you can with a cat…

I always thought I wanted to get a lab when I moved out on my own and decided I wanted to be responsible for an animal. Recently though I visited my family back home and met their new puppy, Sam, the Welsh Corgi – and I’m seriously in love. Cutest breed ever I think. Or maybe it’s just this dog’s personality, but yeah… love dogs. Cat’s are just too aloof for me.

Never got into birds or fish or… snakes *shiver*. Def couldn’t do snakes or spiders.

When ppl ask dog-person or cat-person, I have to answer dog-person. I’m not that into having animals around, but I would be willing to compromise. :)

  28. suzymparker said the following on September 6, 2010 at 2:07 am

I am a cat person all the way. But since I grew up with cats, a dog and later rats I am flexible.

The only area I would have a hard time compromising on is those (no offense intended!) little yappie dogs that fit into a purse. The dogs I prefer are big dogs, like rotties!

  29. Joanna said the following on September 8, 2010 at 6:16 pm

I have two Siamese cats that are full of personality and act a lot more like dogs than your stereotypical aloof cat. Siamese cats are very attached to their people, so they really have strong relationships with their owners.

Though I am more of a cat person, I also love dogs, though I have never owned one. I think Goldens and Labs are really cute, and I also like Pugs.
