When you have to get somewhere that’s more than 100 miles away, how do you prefer to travel and why?

If I’m going by myself (and I know it’s bad for the planet), I prefer to travel by plane.
But if I’m traveling with others, ROADTRIP for me .

I like roadtrips if I can afford them and will need a car at my destination. I like to fly because it is still a novelty for me, is often cheaper than a roadtrip, and is definitely faster.

I like car trips if the weather is pretty good and there are interesting sights to see along the way. In 2005, two gal pals and I made the trip from Nashvegas to Charleston, SC, in two days, and we didn’t kill one another! It was gorgeous weather over Labor Day weekend.
But 10- to 14-hour drives with lots of rain (which seem to be my family’s lot when going to visit my dad’s side) aren’t enjoyable. The trips to Michigan were this (once in Indiana): corn, corn, soybeans, corn, more corn, more soybeans, INDIANAPOLIS!, corn, soybeans, ohmywordwhatisthatsmell!!??, corn, soybeans, Michigan!!! and orchards!!!
I think it would be great to travel long distances by train. But that seems to be a mode of transportation from a bygone era. So sad! (Well, it’s not a common mode here. I guess it’s different on the eastern seaboard.)
Long plane ride? Um… ouch for the legs. But seeing the cloud cover over South America and then greeting the morning while seeing Argentina’s plains rising up beneath us were exciting.
I often wish we had stargates and wormholes and Asgard beaming technology. Travel would be a lot faster!!

Ooh, yeah, AndreaElena, north-south travel in Indiana is a SERIOUS bore. Somehow east-west isn’t as bad. Not that the sights you described change or anything (still lots of corn!), but somehow you actually feel as if you’re going somewhere – a feeling you don’t get when you’re traveling N/S.
As for myself, I really hate driving. Anywhere. If I could walk everywhere I needed to go, I would. However, I don’t mind riding in a car! I would say, though, that if the destination is more than a day’s drive away, I’d prefer to fly. Saves time!

I prefer to fly for time’s sake. However, I don’t enjoy flying anymore with all the rules TSA has in place and the widespread overbooking of flights. Remember when it used to be fun to go to the airport? To greet your loved ones at the gate? Didn’t have to take off your shoes? To see how much you could pack in a suitcase without worrying about weight limits or worry about TSA manhandling you because you set off the metal detector….again? Still, it’s the most effective means of traveling long distances, so I’ll continue to use it to see family and friends.
If the distance is a bit shorter (meaning less than 500 miles), I’ll drive it. I love driving long distances and find it really relaxing.

Roadtrips, no doubt. You feel like you make a connection with all the places you pass through, not just where you’re going. I’d like to try a long train trip, probably in the western US. And I’d try those stargates, as well

I agree with road trips. Love em, love driving. If you have others with you its always interesting…me and 2 other guys drove from Birmingham, AL to Jackson Hole, WY for A Campus Crusade Summer Project and then drove back a month later. It was awesome! Traveled in RVs from DC to Baton Rouge too. Fun times!
Trains are interesting. I’ve used Amtrak many times to go home to FL from DC because it is fairly convenient form of East Coast Travel. Its roomier and more laid back the flight. Once again, its better if you traveling with someone.
Flying is great obviously for time reasons but you can’t really connect (as mentioned in previous posts) unless its something you haven’t seen and yes, you get stiff and sore on those long flights. My first transatlantic flight was cool though because I saw my first sunrise at 30,000ft…seriously bright!
I would say that transporters (Star Trek) would be awesome…beaming form place to place would totally change everything, commuting would never be the same

It depends if it’s 100 mi. or so I would drive. If it’s way more than that (say a 2 day drive) I’d prefer to take a plane. If I had to drive it I would but I like getting places quicker so that way you can enjoy them for longer rather than taking two days to get there. Unless the point of the trip was to sight-see and take your time along the way and then driving wouldn’t be so bad.

If I have time and good company, and get to drive, I’d take driving. I get carsick very easily, though, so it has to be worth it for me to drive.
I prefer flying, if my time is limited and I want to use as much as I can on my actual destination.
And I would be willing to pay huge amounts of money for anyone who figures out how to trasport from place to place!

I usually take the train since I don’t own a car right now and it is a very good mode of transportation here in Germany. I love being able to sit and read or just watch the landscape rolling by.

In general, I prefer traveling by car or train. Either provides a chance to enjoy the scenery, read, or spend quality time with whomever your traveling with–although as a former Indiana resident–I agree with the earlier comments about the Midwest landscape.
(There was a cornfield in the middle of my college campus, and the main library was built so as not to block sunlight to the corn…interesting. )

Roadtrips, with a friend, are fun though! I don’t like driving long distances by myself though. My best friend lives 4 hours away, and trips to her house are some of the longest (and most boring!) trips. I’m always so glad to get there!

I love to roadtrip, especially if I’m going with friends. If I’m solo and the trip is longer than a day, I think I’d chose to fly. I do enjoy driving, though.

If I have no time constraints, I prefer to drive and take the scenic route. I love mapping out new routes and finding places I’ve never been before, even if my destination is a place I go on a regular basis. There’s just something about cranking up the radio, rolling down the window (when it’s not February in Indiana), and driving through small towns and cornfields that I love so much.

Road trips for sure. I like driving alone. You can stay on the road as long or as little as you like, and stop (or not) whenever you like. Once drove from Sedona, AZ to Los Angeles, CA about 500 miles, maybe 7-8 hours, on one tank of gas, with only one stop for the restroom.
But, have also enjoyed scenic drives to and from Southern to Northern, CA several times.

Whatever it is, I prefer company. Considering the distance to the airport and the hours you have to spend at the airport, it’d have to be over 500 miles to be worth flying.
If it’s somewhere I go often, and thus a familiar stretch of Autobahn, I prefer to borrow a powerful car and drive fast. Mine only likes to go 140kmh and on the country stretches, 180-190 is so much more fun (:
If it’s a longer trip with no specified arrival time, I love to stop at anything that looks interesting… roadside stands, castle ruins, local fests, historical sites, friends’ homes…
I prefer the scenic, adventurous route, & the sunroof open.

Flying for sure. I love to fly. I grew up around aviation and if I had it my way I would probably fly every day. I love the feeling of being up in the air. There’s nothing like it.
Road trips are fun too, but if I had to choose I’m pretty sure that I would choose flying.

My favorite way to travel is taking a leisurely boat ride…and of course a few wild skiing, tubing, and boarding adventures mixed in between. There are some great restaurants around many lakes too.
